MAY 18TH - JESSICA BRANDL- RED STAR STUDIOS RESIDENT ARTIST
STORY, OBJECT & DRAWING ON CLAY: CREATING MEANING FROM THE EVERYDAY Jessica Brandl will demonstrate slipping, drawing, and compositional techniques. She’ll address the types of forms she uses, techniques to create them, surface preparation, drawing, and coloring. In addition to the technical aspects, she’ll discuss subject matter and application. |

MAY 25TH - KEIRA NORTON - RED STAR STUDIOS RESIDENT ARTIST
FROM DOLPHINS TO DINGOS: CONSTRUCTING A CLAY ANIMAL HEAD Using stoneware and a few basic tools, Keira Norton will demonstrate how to build an animal head. Focusing on two very different types of animals, she’ll build two heads and provide information on various modeling techniques. Anyone with an interest in the solid-building method or the figure is encouraged to participate! |

JUNE 8TH - EMILY DUKE - RED STAR STUDIOS RESIDENT ARTIST
FROM THE GROUND UP: CERAMICS AND THE URBAN LANDSCAPE Pulling influences from Red Star’s rich surroundings participants will create sculptural ceramic objects that express elements of urban life. Using slab construction as the main building technique, students will focus on creating dynamic forms that narrate a cityscape. Participants will create a small series of dynamic objects that reflect skills demonstrated. Through group discussion and observation students will address what city terrain represents. |

JUNE 15TH - MEREDITH HOST
LOTS OF LAYERS: ACHIEVING DEPTH IN DESIGN Participants will learn about a variety of surface decorating processes that happen before bisque firing with underglaze or slip: paper & vinyl stenciling and Thermofax and EZ Screens screen printing. They will also learn about surface decorating after glaze firing, using iron oxide transfer decals, china paint decals, and vinyl stencils. |

JUNE 22ND - JO KAMM - RED STAR STUDIOS RESIDENT ARTIST
PARALLEL PROCESSING: DIGITAL TOOLS FOR THE ANALOG STUDIO Jo Kamm will provide an introduction to 3D modeling using low-cost, low tech tools and processes. This workshop will cover several applications for 3D modeling, from making objects to planning exhibitions. |

JUNE 29TH - SHAE BISHOP - RED STAR STUDIOS RESIDENT ARTIST
EXPERIMENTAL TILE CONSTRUCTION Shae Bishop will focus on showing a great variety of unusual tile creation, surfacing, and assembly techniques used in his studio practice. The workshop also includes two slide presentations. Techniques covered will include multi-tile press molds, relief printing with slip and much more! |

JULY 6TH - BEN AHLVERS
DYNAMIC FIGURES Using few tools and simple building techniques, Ben will explain how his figurative sculptures develop technically, aesthetically, and conceptually. Employing low-fire clay and a handful of glazes and oxides, he’ll cover how he creates depth and interest in the surface of his work while keeping his options limited. |

JULY 13TH - TOMMY FRANK
CREATIVE SHORTCUTS, STUDIO PRACTICE TIPS Join Red Star studio manager, Tommy Frank to learn shortcuts that will help you make the artwork you want to make without the drudgery you hate. We’ll discuss making work that is meaningful and informative. Participants will learn how to create opportunities for calculated risks that will invigorate processes enhancing art-making skills. |

JULY 20TH - RYAN FLETCHER - RED STAR STUDIOS RESIDENT ARTIST
PLASTER: MADE SIMPLE Ryan Fletcher, will exhibit new and simple ways to make functional pottery by sculpting with wet plaster. He will briefly review the properties of plaster and how they are conducive to making functional pottery. He’ll also show how the plaster wheel can be used for “sketching” a form. |

JULY 27TH - CHANDRA DEBUSE
LAUNCHPAD: FROM FLAT TO FORM Are you looking to learn new techniques to execute your ideas and enliven your pottery forms and surfaces? Chandra DeBuse will share how she creates dynamic pottery forms using simple molds and stamps both on and off the wheel. She will demonstrate imagery techniques using underglaze inlay and brushwork, jam-packing the day with tips and techniques for students of all levels. |
Schedule of Events:
9:30am - Participants start arriving. Coffee and bagels will be served. 10:00am - Formal welcome and introduction. Demonstration begins. 12:00pm - Lunch Break 12:15pm - Artist slide presentation during the completion of the Lunch Break 12:45pm - Demonstration resumes 4:00pm - Workshop Concludes
Workshops:
Red Star Studios hosts unique, one-weekend workshops with visiting and exhibiting artists from around the world. The workshops accommodate enthusiasts at every level of practice, from beginners to the experienced. Often, these artists are exhibiting in our Gallery during the same month of their workshop, allowing visitors the opportunity to not only admire the work shown in the Red Star Gallery, but to engage in and learn the methods of creation involved in the artists' processes.
