Red Star Studios presents new work from ceramic artists Kathy King and Chris Theiss. Both artists use “sgraffito”, to produce narrative work that reflects their unique perspectives. Sgraffito is a decorative technique that involves covering the wet clay surface with colored slip, then carving a design through the slip to reveal the clay layer underneath.
Using sgraffito, Kathy King tells stories on the surfaces of her tiled furniture, plates, and vessels. She sifts through personal experiences, composing work informed by her feminine viewpoint and her home, the East Coast. Chris Theiss’ tabletop sculptures are layered with fictional characters and illustrate intricate scenes from different rooms of a home. His use of sgraffito, which illuminates and animates his whimsical “domestic landscapes,” gives his work a rich depth.
In conjunction with this exhibition, Kathy King will conduct a two-day, hands-on workshop on Saturday, March 8th and Sunday, March 9th from 10am to 4pm. Kathy King and Chris Theiss will also present a free, public slide lecture at 4:30 PM on Saturday, March 8thThe workshop and free presentation will take place at Belger Crane Yard Studios, located at 2011 Tracy, Kansas City, MO 64108.
